North Carolina Marijuana Megastore Celebrates Three Months Open

The Great Smoky Cannabis Company in Cherokee, North Carolina, will mark three months of operation as of tomorrow, December 7.

Located at 91 Bingo Loop Rd on the tribal land of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the store has become the first and only place in North Carolina where anyone 21 and older can legally purchase marijuana and marijuana products.

Since it opened its doors to nontribal members on September 7, the store has attracted tens of thousands of patrons. It offers a wide array of marijuana products, including dried flower, prerolls, concentrates such as wax and live resin, topicals like body creams and pain salves, and various edibles, including gummies, brownies, chocolate bars, cookies, and drinkable shots.

So far, it appears customers have been happy with the service they’ve received. On WeedMaps, the Great Smoky Cannabis Company has a five star rating, whereas on Google they have a solid 4.6/5 rating out of nearly 1,000 reviews.

Housed in a former bingo hall that underwent a $50 million renovation, The Great Smoky Cannabis Company is the largest marijuana store in the country. The store initially opened on April 20 but was restricted to tribal members. After a brief expansion on July 4 to recreational consumers, it became fully accessible to anyone 21 and older, regardless of tribal or medical status, on September 7.

Concerns about potential police checkpoints outside tribal land were raised before the store opened, but no arrests related to purchases at the store have been reported.

Despite the success of the Great Smoky Cannabis Company, other tribes in North Carolina told us they have no plans to follow suit.
