California Awards $18.4 Million in Grants, Including $3.5 Million to LA, to Expand Access to Legal Marijuana Industry

The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development has awarded $18.4 million in grants to support equitable access to California’s regulated marijuana industry.

The funding, distributed among 18 local jurisdictions, is intended to lower entry barriers and assist local applicants and licensees.

The latest round of funding includes:

  • Los Angeles – $3,500,000
  • San Francisco (city and county)  – $3,324,052.50
  • Oakland – $2,074,369.75
  • Sacramento – $1,680,777.31
  • San Diego County – $1,413,134.46
  • Long Beach – $1,198,263.18
  • Humboldt County – $657,436.98
  • Mendocino County – $612,689.88
  • Richmond – $600,000
  • Sonoma County – $558,102.04
  • Nevada City – $557,845.81
  • Palm Springs – $538,328.09
  • Nevada County – $500,000
  • Trinity County – $500,000
  • Vista – $250,000
  • Watsonville – $250,000
  • Coachella – $200,000

Officials say the grants will also help transition businesses into the legal marketplace, reducing the influence of the illicit market. The funds can be used for financial assistance, such as low- or no-interest loans, fee waivers, and grants, as well as technical support, including business consulting and regulatory guidance.

Since the program’s launch, California has provided $123.4 million in funding to 34 local jurisdictions to strengthen participation in the state’s legal marijuana industry.
