Libyan Court Sentences Man to Life in Prison for Cannabis

A man has been sentenced to life in prison by the Tripoli Court of Appeals for operating a cannabis cultivation site south of the Libyan capital, according to a statement released by the country’s Attorney General.

The court determined that the individual was growing cannabis with the intent to produce and traffic hashish. Authorities say the investigation uncovered a significant operation involving both cultivation and processing equipment.

Following the probe, prosecutors brought formal charges, and the case advanced to the Court of Appeals. During a recent hearing, the court handed down a life sentence, imposed a fine of 50,000 Libyan dinars, and ordered the seizure of all assets linked to the operation. This includes the farm itself, the production tools used in processing the cannabis, and the stockpile of drugs that had been confiscated during the investigation.

The ruling reflects Libya’s continued strict stance on drug-related offenses, particularly those involving production and distribution. Under Libyan law, such crimes often result in severe penalties, including life imprisonment or death.
