New Jersey Has Awarded Over 2,300 Cannabis Licenses, Including More Than 1,300 Retail Licenses

New Jersey has issued a total of 2,305 cannabis business licenses as of May 1, according to data released by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission.

Of the licenses issued, 1,604 are conditional, 444 are conditional-to-annual conversions, and 257 are full annual licenses. These licenses cover a wide range of operations, including cultivation, manufacturing, retail, distribution, delivery, wholesaling, and testing labs.

Retail licenses account for the largest share, with a combined total of 1,306 licenses issued for marijuana retail outlets. That includes 917 conditional retail licenses, 252 that have converted to annual, and 137 that were issued as annual licenses directly.

The state has also approved 620 conditional licenses for microbusinesses, along with 148 microbusinesses that have converted to annual licenses and 29 granted annual licenses outright, bringing the total number of licensed microbusinesses to 797.

Other categories include:

  • 526 cultivation licenses (373 conditional, 106 converted, 47 annual)

  • 392 manufacturing licenses (256 conditional, 80 converted, 56 annual)

  • 21 wholesaler licenses

  • 15 distributor licenses

  • 36 delivery licenses

  • 9 testing labs

The state’s growing number of licensees reflects a robust and expanding marijuana market following the legalization of adult-use sales in 2021.
