New York’s legal cannabis market continues to gain momentum, with May 2025 sales reaching $114.8 million, according to data from research firm Headset.
May marked one of the strongest months of the year, trailing only behind March. The year-to-date sales from January through May now total approximately $464.5 million, putting the state on track to top $1 billion by the end of the year.

The top-selling strain in May was Sour Diesel, a classic sativa known for its pungent aroma and energizing effects. The average price for an eighth of flower stood at $37, while concentrates averaged $46 per gram.
New York legalized adult-use cannabis on March 31, 2021, with the signing of the Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA). This legislation established the Office of Cannabis Management to oversee the regulation and licensing of cannabis businesses in the state.
The state’s first legal adult-use cannabis dispensary, Housing Works Cannabis Co., opened its doors in Manhattan on December 29, 2022.
With over $464 million in sales in the first five months of 2025, New York’s cannabis industry is on track for a record-breaking year, reflecting the state’s growing acceptance and demand for legal cannabis products.
