Maine Marijuana Sales Set Record for Third Straight Month

In Maine marijuana sales have set a monthly record for the third month in a row.

There was $20,872,185 in legal marijuana sold in July in Maine. This is an over $2 million increase from the record-breaking $18,484,493 sold in June. In May there was $17.2 million sold, a record at the time. This is according to data released by the Maine’s Office of Cannabis Policy.

There were 360,886 different marijuana transactions in July, an increase of 38,000 over June. The average price per gram in July was $7.79, a record-low that’s $0.11 lower than the average for June.

The year-to-date total for marijuana sales in Maine is now $118,344,134, with the total number of sales transactions in 2023 at 2,033,596

In Maine marijuana was legalized via a citizen initiative in 2016. The part of the law allowing for those 21 and older to possess up to 2.5 ounces and grow up to six plants took in effect the following year, but due to legislative delays the first licensed marijuana store didn’t open until October, 2020. Under the law marijuana receives a 5.5% general sales tax rate at retail, with edibles taxed at 8%.
