In Massachusetts there was over $150 million worth of marijuana and marijuana products sold by licensed retail outlets in September.
According to the state’s Cannabis Control Commission, those 21 and older purchased $152.8 million worth of marijuana in September. This marks a slight decrease from the record-breaking $158 million sold last month, but it’s more than any month prior. Sales numbers include dried marijuana flower and marijuana concentrates as well as products containing marijuana including edibles, tinctures and topicals.
In September recreational marijuana sales reached $135 million, with there being $17.8 million in medical marijuana purchased during the same period.
The price per gram of dried marijuana dropped by $0.05 in September compared to August, with the average being $5.91. The price per ounce dropped from $169 to $167..48.
Massachusetts marijuana stores have now sold $1.24 billion in legal marijuana year-to-date, and $5.23 billion since the start of recreational marijuana sales in November, 2018.
Massachusetts’ recreational marijuana law was passed via an initiative in 2016, with the first marijuana store opening in 2018. The law allows those 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants. Recreational marijuana purchases include a marijuana excise tax of 10.75%, which is in addition to the standard statewide sales tax of 6.25%. Localities can also institute a citywide tax of up to 3%.
There are currently 101 active marijuana strains currently being sold in Massachusetts. This is a 910% increase over the number of active strains when legal marijuana sales first began in November, 2018.
