Ohio House Speaker No Longer Wants to Undo Marijuana Legalization Law

Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman has softened his stance on altering the state’s marijuana legalization law, a significant change from his November promise to undo the law.

This change follows discussions with State Representatives Jamie Callender, a marijuana legalization advocate, and industry representatives.

Ohio voters approved Issue 2 in November 2023, legalizing marijuana for everyone 21 and older. The law allows individuals to grow up to six plants, with a maximum of 12 per household. Since the first licensed recreational marijuana store opened on August 7, the state has generated a combined $397,777,981 in marijuana sales.

Huffman previously supported making recreational marijuana illegal again, and if that wasn’t possible establishing restrictions such as reducing home cultivation limits or banning it entirely, establishing strict THC limits, and banning most vape products. However, he recently downplayed the significance of home cultivation, saying, “I don’t think that’s really that a big deal in terms of this issue.” While maintaining personal opposition to marijuana legalization, he acknowledged its permanence in Ohio law.

Callender credits Huffman’s shift to his efforts to educate lawmakers about the marijuana industry. “Even if they’re personally opposed, they’ve accepted that it’s here and shifted focus to making it safe,” Callender said. He added that upcoming legislation might regulate delta-8 products and align medical marijuana THC limits with recreational standards.

Dispensary operators like AJ Caraballo remain concerned about potential policy changes that could confuse consumers or harm the program. “Customers are still learning they have access to safe, legal products in Ohio,” Caraballo said, emphasizing the importance of respecting voters’ decisions.

Lawmakers are expected to introduce new marijuana regulations in the coming months, focusing on unregulated THC products.
