Barbados Opens First Medicinal Marijuana Dispensary, Signaling Industry Milestone

Island Therapeutics Inc. has become the first licensed business to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Barbados, a major step forward nearly five years after the nation legalized the industry.

The facility, located in Worthing, Christ Church, held its official opening Friday evening. The event drew support from government officials, medical professionals, academics, and members of the Rastafarian community—groups that have played key roles in shaping the island’s cannabis policy.

“This is a proud moment for us and for Barbados,” said Island Therapeutics co-owner Kevin Hudson. “Our cannabis is locally grown and dispensed with purpose and care at every stage—from seed to shelf.” He said the dispensary was designed to prioritize patients, adding, “We built this space where wellness meets professionalism and where each person is met with respect, knowledge and compassion.”

Hudson emphasized that the opening symbolizes a shift in Barbados’ role in the marijuana industry. “We are no longer just consumers,” he said. “Today, we are participants, contributors and pioneers.”

The Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority (BMCLA), which regulates the program, says the new dispensary meets all safety and quality requirements. “Make no mistake,” said BMCLA CEO Shanika Roberts-Odle. “The cannabis here has been cultivated to proper standards and tested thoroughly. It should be used safely and responsibly.”

She clarified that products are not available to the general public without medical authorization. “The law allows medicinal use only. You must have a prescription from a doctor, and it must be dispensed by a pharmacist. Recreational use is not legal,” she said.

Since the passage of the Medicinal Cannabis Industry Bill in 2019, the BMCLA has approved 11 licensees and issued a total of 30 licenses across cultivation, manufacturing, distribution and other areas. Roberts-Odle said the legislative framework will continue to evolve as scientific research progresses, ensuring Barbados remains competitive in the global marketplace.
