Rasmussen Poll Finds Majority of Americans Say Marijuana Is Not Dangerous, Just 16% Consider it “Very Dangerous”

A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds that most Americans still do not consider marijuana to be dangerous, though the number who say otherwise has increased in recent years.

According to the poll, 51% of U.S. adults say marijuana use is not dangerous, with 24% saying it is not dangerous at all. Meanwhile, 42% believe marijuana use is dangerous, up from 35% when the same question was asked in 2022. Just 16% say it is “very dangerous.”

The results highlight both the sustained shift toward more favorable views of marijuana and the persistent concerns that continue to shape the debate. While the majority of respondents reject the idea that marijuana use is inherently dangerous, the rising share of those expressing some concern suggests a more complicated public opinion landscape, potentially influenced by the rise of hemp-derived THC products.

The survey comes as more states consider marijuana legalization measures and as federal lawmakers and President Trump consider nationwide reforms such as rescheduling, STATES 2.0, and the MORE Act.

The finding that only a small minority see marijuana as “very dangerous” underscores how far public attitudes have moved from the era of prohibition, even as some cautionary views gain ground.
