A case report published in the Brazilian Journal of Biology finds that full-spectrum cannabis oil may be an effective treatment for chronic pain and sleep dysfunction associated with myofascial temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
Researchers from Universidade Federal da Paraíba and Universidade de São Paulo studied a 28-year-old woman with chronic muscular TMD and poor sleep quality who was treated at the School of Dentistry of Araçatuba. She was prescribed a full-spectrum cannabis oil containing a 1:1 ratio of THC to CBD for 60 days, with a maximum of 10 drops daily. Pain was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and sleep was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
The patient’s orofacial pain score dropped from 7 to 3 over the treatment period, while her PSQI results showed notable improvement in sleep quality, reaching a global level of 6, suggesting more restorative sleep. Mild side effects such as drowsiness and gastrointestinal discomfort occurred but were managed through dosage adjustments.
The authors conclude by stating:
In conclusion, the use of Full Spectrum Cannabis Oil in this case was associated with a clinically meaningful reduction in chronic orofacial pain and improvement in sleep quality, with no adverse effects or laboratory abnormalities observed during the treatment period. These outcomes suggest that individualized cannabinoid-based therapy may be a safe and effective approach for selected patients with temporomandibular disorders and comorbid sleep disturbances.
