Montana’s Cannabis Industry Generated $87 Million in Sales in Q3 2025, Including a Record-Breaking $30 Million in August

Montana’s legal marijuana market brought in nearly $87 million during the third quarter of 2025, according to new data from the Department of Revenue.

August stood out as a historic month for the state, with retailers surpassing $30 million in sales for the first time since legalization began in 2022.

The quarter started strong with $29.46 million in July sales, followed by August’s record $30.05 million, and closed with $27.83 million in September. These figures bring the year-to-date total to $244,387,462.

Since adult-use sales launched in January 2022, Montana has now seen over $1.19 billion in combined cannabis sales, with more than $961 million coming from the recreational market and $229 million from medical marijuana. In the same period, the state has collected over $201 million in cannabis-related taxes.

The Q3 2025 numbers highlight the continued strength of Montana’s cannabis sector, with August setting a new benchmark for monthly performance. As the market matures, all-time sales crossing the billion-dollar threshold points to marijuana becoming a lasting pillar of the state’s economy.

Montana voters approved Initiative 190 in November 2020, legalizing recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older. The law took effect on January 1, 2021, with licensed sales beginning a year later in January 2022. Adults are allowed to purchase and possess up to one ounce of marijuana and cultivate up to two mature plants and two seedlings for personal use. The system is regulated by the Department of Revenue, which oversees licensing for cultivation, manufacturing, and retail sales. Tax revenue from marijuana is distributed to the state’s general fund, conservation programs, substance abuse treatment, and veteran services.
