According to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, the state’s first legal medical cannabis sales will take place “within the next couple of weeks.”
Although the state legalized medical marijuana at the start of 2025, dispensaries have not yet opened their doors to patients. However, that will soon change.
Beshear said today that progress has accelerated across the system, noting that 48 licensed dispensaries are now positioned statewide. According to the governor, the first location expected to begin sales is an Ohio County dispensary, which he said should have product on its shelves within a couple of weeks.
“So I believe within the next couple of weeks that our first dispensary will have product on its shelf”, said Beshear. “That is the Ohio County dispensary that we think will be the first. But we believe it’s going to scale up, very quickly from that first moment.”
Ohio County sits in western Kentucky, where one of the state’s earliest batches of medical marijuana products is awaiting final testing. Beshear said several cultivators have already completed harvests and are currently moving through required quality and safety reviews.
The forthcoming launch arrives as patient enrollment continues to build. Nearly 24,000 Kentuckians have now received e-certifications that will allow them to purchase medical marijuana once sales begin.
