Montana’s legal marijuana market brought in $26,889,204 in sales during January, marking a strong start to the year and continuing the state’s steady pace of consumer demand.
Of the total, $24,016,740 came from adult-use purchases, while $2,872,464 was generated through the medical marijuana program. The figures put January’s performance ahead of the $25.9 million recorded in January 2025, showing a modest but notable year-over-year growth.
Since legal sales began in January 2022, Montanans have now purchased $1,300,809,740 worth of marijuana through licensed retailers, reflecting how firmly established the market has become just three years into adult-use legalization.
Montana voters approved adult-use marijuana through Initiative 190 in November 2020, legalizing possession and creating a regulated retail system overseen by the state. The first adult-use marijuana stores opened their doors on January 1, 2022, converting many existing medical providers into dual-licensed retailers overnight.
Under Montana law, adults 21 and older can possess up to one ounce of marijuana, eight grams of concentrate, and grow up to two mature and two immature plants for personal use. Medical marijuana patients continue to operate under a separate framework with higher purchase allowances tied to physician recommendations.
With sales once again topping $25 million for the month and lifetime totals now exceeding $1.3 billion, Montana’s market remains one of the most consistent performers among smaller-population states in the country.
