Montana Cannabis Sales Top $134 Million in First Five Months of 2026, All-Time Sales Reach $1.4 Billion

Montana marijuana retailers sold $134,132,918 worth of products during the first five months of 2026, according to new data from the Montana Department of Revenue. The total includes $120,384,905 in adult-use sales and $13,748,013 in medical marijuana sales.

May was the strongest month of the year so far, with $27,706,021 in total sales, including $25,019,176 from adult-use purchases and $2,686,846 from medical marijuana. March followed closely with $27,384,763 in total sales, while April brought in $26,912,941, January totaled $26,889,204 and February reached $25,239,989.

Sales are running slightly ahead of the same period in 2025, when Montana dispensaries sold about $129.9 million worth of marijuana products from January through May. Adult-use sales have continued to grow, rising from about $113.6 million during the first five months of 2025 to $120.4 million during the same period this year, while medical sales declined from about $16.3 million to $13.7 million.

Since January 2022, Montana dispensaries have sold $1,408,053,454 worth of marijuana products. Adult-use sales account for $1,155,472,913 of that total, while medical marijuana sales account for $252,580,541. During that period, the state has reported $241,197,804 in marijuana tax revenue, including $231,094,583 from adult-use sales.

Montana voters approved adult-use marijuana legalization through Initiative 190 in November 2020. Possession became legal for adults 21 and older on January 1, 2021, and the first adult-use sales began one year later, on January 1, 2022, through previously licensed medical marijuana businesses in counties where voters supported legalization. Adults may purchase and possess up to one ounce of usable marijuana, including up to 8 grams or 8 milliliters of concentrate or 800 milligrams of THC-infused products.

Montana taxes adult-use marijuana at 20%, while medical marijuana is taxed at 4%. Counties may also impose a local-option marijuana excise tax of up to 3% on medical marijuana, adult-use marijuana or both.
