These 5 States Have the Cheapest Legal Recreational Marijuana Prices

Recreational marijuana is legal in 24 states, with all but Virginia allowing licensed sales. Prices in these states vary substantially.

Among these states, the average price of marijuana and marijuana products varies significantly, with some states having averages more than double those of others.

Using data compiled by state regulatory agencies, here are the five legal marijuana states with the cheapest average cannabis prices:

Oregon

$3.75 per gram

Oregon has the cheapest legal marijuana prices by far. In May, the average price of dried marijuana flower was $3.75, and it has not exceeded $3.81 at any point over the past 12 months. Marijuana concentrates are notably higher but still lower than most other states, at $16 per gram.

Oregon legalized marijuana in 2014, with the first retail outlet opening in 2016.

Massachusetts

$5.36 per gram

As of the end of May, the average price per gram of dried marijuana flower in Massachusetts is $5.36. It has not risen above $6.01 at any point over the past 12 months.

Massachusetts legalized marijuana in 2016, and the first licensed marijuana store opened in 2018.

Washington

$7 per gram

Washington, alongside Colorado, was the first state to legalize recreational marijuana in 2012. Since the first store opened in 2014, average prices have dropped substantially. As of the end of May, the average price per gram of dried marijuana flower is $7.

Michigan

$7.02 per gram

In Michigan, the average price of marijuana is slightly higher than in Washington, averaging $7.02 per gram.

Michigan voters legalized marijuana in November 2018, with the first licensed retail outlet opening the following year.

Maine

$7.41 per gram

As of the start of June, the average price per gram of marijuana in Maine is $7.41, with the average over the past 12 months standing at $7.31.

Marijuana was legalized in Maine via the initiative process in 2016. Due to legislative delays, the first licensed marijuana store didn’t open until October 2020.
