Michigan’s legal marijuana market generated nearly $250 million in total sales.
According to data released today by the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), there was $247,325,681 in total marijuana sales in January, a modest increase over the $242 million sold in January 2024. This bring all-time sales to $12,087,986,053, including $10,465,670,100 in recreational marijuana sales and $1,622,315,953 in medical marijuana purchases.
In January, the average price for an ounce of cannabis dropped from the already all-time low of $69.20 in December, to a new low of $66.50 as of January 31.
CRA’s January sales report shows that there is now 850 licensed marijuana stores in the state, and 2,262 active marijuana business licenses including 955 growers, 283 processors, 41 marijuana event organizers, 23 secure transporters, 21 safety compliance facilities, 19 microbusinesses, four designated consumption establishments, and one educational research license.
Michigan voters approved marijuana legalization in 2018, with the first licensed retail outlets opening the following year. Those 21 and older may legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and 15 grams of marijuana concentrate. Recreational marijuana is subject to a 10% excise tax, in addition to the state’s 6% sales tax.
The state allocates marijuana tax revenue as follows: 15% to local governments with marijuana businesses, 15% to counties and municipalities, 35% to the School Aid Fund, and 35% to the Michigan Transportation Fund. Remaining funds support substance abuse treatment and law enforcement training programs.
