Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a strong proponent of marijuana legalization, has stated that he would “certainly consider” a run for president in 2028.
In an interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour, Walz discussed his future in politics and the possibility of a presidential bid in 2028.
Walz said “I’m not somebody who aspired to be president or vice president. But I also recognize if you have something to offer, and it’s the right time, you have to at least be open to the discussion.”
Walz says that when it comes to running for president, “If I think I could offer something.. I would certainly consider that.”
In 2023 Walz signed Minnesota’s marijuana legalization bill into law, making the state the 23rd in the nation to legalize recreational use. He has long supported cannabis reform, arguing that it is a matter of justice, public safety, and economic opportunity.
Proponents of legalization are hopeful that Walz’s presence in the 2028 discussion could push President Trump, who has shown some openness to marijuana reform but has been quiet on the issue since taking office, to take action. While campaigning for president in 2024, Trump stated he was open to rescheduling marijuana and supported the SAFER Banking Act, which would allow marijuana businesses to access financial services. He also endorsed Florida’s Amendment 3, a marijuana legalization initiative set for a vote in November 2024.
Walz, who has yet to decide whether he will run for re-election as governor in 2026, has ruled out a bid for retiring U.S. Senator Tina Smith’s seat.
