Florida’s Medical Marijuana Program Nears One Million Patients

Florida now has 920,582 registered medical marijuana patients, according to data released today by the state’s Department of Health. The updated numbers reflect patient totals as of August 6.

That’s an increase of more than 1,700 since early July, and just over 35,000 more than the state reported at this time last year. Since August 2022, around 175,000 new patients have joined the state’s medical cannabis program.

Florida continues to operate the largest medical-only marijuana market in the country, with patients able to purchase flower, concentrates, tinctures, topicals, edibles, and other marijuana products from hundreds of licensed dispensaries statewide. Of the 24 states that have legalized recreational cannabis, only three regularly have more monthly sales than Florida (California, Michigan, and Illinois), even though Florida is a medical-only state. The state’s medical marijuana program was established following the passage of a constitutional amendment approved by 71% of voters in 2016.

Meanwhile, a campaign to legalize marijuana for all adults continues to gain traction. Smart & Safe Florida has already collected over 660,000 valid signatures in support of placing a legalization initiative on the 2026 ballot. The group needs to reach 880,062 signatures to qualify.
