Arkansas Medical Marijuana Patient Count Reaches 115,501

Arkansas now has 115,501 active medical marijuana patients, according to new data released by the state’s Department of Health.

According to updated figures from the Arkansas Department of Health, the state had 115,501 active medical marijuana patients as of May 2. That’s an increase of 226 from the roughly 115,275 active patients reported in March, and up about 4,500 compared to the same period last year.

The figures show Arkansas’ medical marijuana program continuing to expand steadily, even as several surrounding states have moved forward with broader marijuana reforms. Patient ID cards are issued by the Department of Health, while the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control agency oversees the licensing of medical marijuana dispensaries.

Arkansas voters legalized medical marijuana in 2016 with the approval of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment. The state’s first legal dispensary opened in May 2019, nearly three years after voters approved the constitutional amendment.

Under Arkansas law, registered medical marijuana patients may purchase and possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana from a licensed dispensary during a 14-day period. Patients must have a qualifying medical condition and receive a physician certification before applying for a registry card.

With more than 115,000 active patients, Arkansas remains one of the larger medical-only marijuana markets in the region, with enrollment continuing to inch upward year-over-year.
