$8.4 Million in Legal Marijuana Sold in April in Rhode Island

There was $8.4 million in legal marijuana sold in Rhode Island in April.

According to data released by the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulations there was a total of $8,421,924.28 in marijuana and marijuana products (such as edibles, topicals and concentrates) sold in April.

In April there was $5,392,693.68 in recreational marijuana sold, which is in addition to the $2,959,442.26  worth of medical marijuana and medical marijuana products sold.

The average cost per transaction in April was $30.08, a $.02 increase from March, and a $0.53 decrease from the average in February


The total legal marijuana sales in Rhode Island Between December 1, 2022 (the start of legal sales) and March 31, 2023 is now $39 million.

Under Rhode Island’s marijuana law, initially passed in July, 2021, marijuana receives a 10% excise tax which is in addition to the 7% statewide sales tax and a local tax of up to 3%. Medical marijuana patients are required to pay the 7% sales tax, but not the 10% excise tax.

Based on these numbers Rhode Island has made nearly $4 million in marijuana tax revenue over the past four months, not counting local taxes.

In Rhode Island those 21 and older are allowed to purchase, posses and consume up to an ounce of marijuana, and they can grow up to 12 plants for personal use.
