Missouri Marijuana Stores Sold $124 Million Worth of Product in March, a New Monthly Record

In Missouri there was over $124 million worth of marijuana sold legally in March, a new monthly record.

According to data just released by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, there was $124.7 million in marijuana and marijuana products sold legally through licensed marijuana retail outlets and dispensaries. This breaks the previous monthly record of $123 million set in December, and is roughly $3 million more than the marijuana sales total for April, 2023.

Of the $114 million sold, $108.7 million was sold to recreational consumers, an over $10 million increase from February. Medical marijuana patients purchased $16 million worth of marijuana, an increase of $900k from April.

Total marijuana sales for 2024 is now $347 million. In 2023 there was $1.3 billion in legal marijuana sold, resulting in over $100 million in tax revenue for the state.

In Missouri voters legalized marijuana in 2022, with marijuana stores opening in February, 2023. The law allows those 21 and older to possess up to three ounces of marijuana, while allowing them to cultivate up to six marijuana plants for personal use. The state’s medical marijuana law was passed by voters in 2018, with the first dispensary opening their doors in October, 2020.

In Missouri recreational marijuana is taxed at 6%, in addition to the state’s 4.2% statewide sales tax. Medical marijuana is taxed at just 4%. Localities are also allowed to establish a citywide tax of up to 3%.

In last week’s primary election, six cities and Dent County voted to establish a 3% local marijuana tax.
