Montana Legal Cannabis Sales Top $150 Million in 2025, Bringing in Nearly $30 Million in Tax Revenue

Montana’s legal marijuana market has now exceeded $150 million in sales for 2025, according to new data released by the Department of Revenue.

In June alone, legal marijuana sales reached $27,123,762, including $24,054,954 from adult-use sales and $3,068,808 from the state’s medical marijuana program. That brings the total sales for 2025 to $156,136,784, with adult-use accounting for the vast majority at over $143 million, while medical marijuana brought in just under $13 million.

Since legal sales began in January 2022, Montana has recorded $1,104,055,473 in combined marijuana sales. This includes $885.5 million in adult-use sales and $218.5 million from medical marijuana.

The state has collected $185,508,185 in tax revenue from legal marijuana, with adult-use taxed at 20% and medical marijuana taxed at 4%, including nearly $30 in taxes made in 2025 alone. Local governments can also apply an additional 3% tax on both categories, which isn’t included in these figures.

Montana legalized recreational marijuana through a voter-approved initiative in November 2020, with adult-use sales beginning on January 1, 2022. Under state law, those 21 and older can legally possess up to one ounce of marijuana and grow up to two mature plants and two seedlings for personal use. Marijuana businesses must be licensed by the Montana Department of Revenue, and counties had the option to opt out of adult-use sales if they voted against legalization in 2020.
