Canada’s Legal Marijuana Sales Hit Record CA$485 Million in May, Pushing 2025 Total Past CA$2.2 Billion

Canada’s legal marijuana market hit a new monthly high in May, generating CA$485.421 million in sales, according to new data released today from Statistics Canada.

The figure marks the single largest month for cannabis revenue since legal sales began in 2019, surpassing the previous record of CA$466.7 million set just last month.

The surge in May pushed year-to-date legal cannabis sales to over CA$2.22 billion, extending the sector’s record-breaking trajectory through the first five months of 2025.

Ontario once again led all provinces with CA$193 million in sales, followed by Alberta with CA$87 million and British Columbia at CA$70 million. Together, the top three provinces accounted for nearly 73% of total national cannabis revenue.

Legal marijuana was approved nationwide in 2018, with sales commencing in 2019. Canadian adults may legally possess up to 30 grams of marijuana, and they can grow up to four plants per household. Over 4,150 licensed retailers now operate across the country, with products taxed federally and provincially.
