President Trump Endorses Joe Gruters for RNC Chair, Backs Medical Marijuana and Open to Recreational Legalization

President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Florida State Senator Joe Gruters to lead the Republican National Committee, a move that could mark a historic shift for the party on marijuana policy.

In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump praised Gruters as “somebody who will do a wonderful job as the Chairman of the RNC,” adding, “he will have my Complete and Total Endorsement.”

During his time in the Florida Legislature, Gruters has consistently supported expanding access to medical marijuana. In 2020, he filed legislation (SB 1860) that would have protected public employees in Florida from being fired or disciplined solely for using medical marijuana in compliance with state law. He also supported efforts to streamline regulations for Florida’s medical marijuana program and has publicly acknowledged the need for the Republican Party to modernize its stance on the issue.

In 2024 Gruters endorsed Amendment 3 to legalize recreational cannabis in Flroida, saying “Supporting Amendment 3 is a common-sense decision that prioritizes individual freedom, health, safety and economic growth. By legalizing recreational marijuana for adults, we can give Floridians access to safe products, generate significant revenue for critical public services and create new job opportunities for Floridians.”

Gruters’ support for cannabis reform reflects shifting attitudes among Republican voters, particularly younger conservatives and veterans, many of whom back access to both medical and recreational marijuana. His elevation to RNC chair would mark a notable break from the party’s long-standing opposition to legalization and could embolden other Republican lawmakers to take a more progressive stance on marijuana policy.

Gruters, a longtime ally of the former president and co-chair of Trump’s 2016 Florida campaign, previously served as chair of the Republican Party of Florida. If chosen to lead the RNC, he would be the most pro-cannabis chair ever.
