Legal cannabis sales in the United States reached $2.27 billion in August, according to an analysis of state data conducted by The Marijuana Herald.

August sales, which were on par with the $2.3 billion sold in July, bring the year-to-date total to approximately $17.5 billion. The August figures are the first to include Delaware, where recreational sales began August 1. Minnesota remains excluded, with legal sales expected to launch later this year or in early 2026. Virginia continues to stand apart as the only one of the 24 states with legal marijuana that still does not allow retail sales.
In addition to including the 23 states that have legalized recreational cannabis, the analysis includes the medical-only markets of Arkansas, Florida, Oklahoma and Utah. Other medical cannabis states were not included because reliable sales data for August was unavailable.
Below is a state-by-state breakdown of sales in August. All figures were provided by either state regulatory agencies/cannabis commissions, or the research firm Headset.
