A new national survey finds that nearly one in three adults have used cannabis in the past six months, and strong majorities support legalization, view dispensaries as beneficial to local economies, and believe marijuana offers significant health and wellness benefits.
MRI-Simmons’ 2025 National Cannabis Study found that 31% of U.S. adults have consumed marijuana recently.
The study shows broad recognition of marijuana’s economic potential. Nearly three-quarters of respondents, 74%, say legalization is a smart way to raise tax revenue, while 73% believe dispensaries strengthen local economies. About 65% would welcome a dispensary in their own city, and 54% say they would consider investing in a marijuana-related business. The survey also points to a large untapped market, with 55% of adults willing to try marijuana if it were legal in their state.
Interest in marijuana products goes beyond traditional use. More than half of adults say they are interested in cannabis-friendly tourism or infused food and drinks, and 45% are intrigued by marijuana-based self-care products.
Health and wellness are central to changing perceptions. The study found that 73% of Americans believe marijuana has health benefits, and 68% specifically point to its therapeutic potential. Roughly two-thirds see it as good for both mind and body, while the same number consider CBD beneficial for health and beauty. A majority, 61%, view marijuana as a healthier alternative to alcohol, underscoring its growing role in the wellness market.
Support for legalization continues to grow, with 62% of respondents saying marijuana should be legal nationwide and 64% believing all states will allow it within five years. Seventy percent agree legalization helps reduce illegal drug trafficking, while 63% support clearing past marijuana convictions. Just over half, 52%, say people previously convicted of selling marijuana should receive priority in licensing for legal dispensaries.
Public opinion also points to shifts in financial and political considerations. Two-thirds of respondents want banks to be able to serve marijuana businesses without penalty, and 59% say they are more likely to support political candidates who back legalization.
The findings highlight marijuana’s evolution into a mainstream product with strong consumer demand, broad economic support, and a clear political mandate. For businesses and policymakers, the message is straightforward: Americans are ready for full legalization, wider product innovation, and expanded access.
