Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced today the approval of the commonwealth’s first licensed medical marijuana processor, clearing the way for a broader rollout of products to patients in the coming weeks.
According to the governor’s office, Team Kentucky has approved Bison Infused, located in Dayton, as the state’s first medical marijuana processor. The approval means processed medical marijuana products are expected to begin reaching the market soon, allowing dispensaries to expand beyond limited offerings and better serve qualified patients across the state.
The announcement comes as Kentucky’s dispensary network continues to take shape. The Post Dispensary in Beaver Dam opened last month, becoming the state’s first fully approved and licensed medical marijuana dispensary. Governor Beshear also said that Team Kentucky expects The Speakeasy, a dispensary in Lexington, to open later this month. In addition, Bluegrass Cannacare, a dispensary approved to operate in Boone County, is expected to open once additional products become available through the supply chain.
Patient participation in the program continues to grow rapidly. State officials report that more than 17,309 Kentuckians have now been approved for medical marijuana cards. At the same time, over 509 health care practitioners are registered to issue certifications, and they have already provided nearly 26,000 electronic certifications.
Kentucky voters approved medical marijuana in 2023, with the program formally launching in stages as licensing and regulatory systems were put in place. With processing now authorized and additional dispensaries preparing to open, state officials say patient access is expected to expand significantly in the weeks ahead.
