California Marijuana Sales Reach $323 Million in June, Nearly $2 Billion Sold in First Half of 2026

California’s legal marijuana market brought in $323,143,771 in sales in June, bringing the state’s total for the first half of 2026 to nearly $1.95 billion.

According to data from Seattle-based research firm Headset, June’s total was nearly identical to the roughly $322 million sold in June 2025, showing a stable year-over-year market despite ongoing challenges facing California’s licensed marijuana industry.

The June total follows $332,999,144 in sales in May, $334,811,551 in April, $329,703,021 in March, $302,455,208 in February and $324,421,975 in January. Combined, California marijuana retailers sold $1,947,534,670 worth of legal product between January and June.

Among individual strains, OG #18 was the top-selling strain in California for June, according to Headset.

California remains by far the largest legal marijuana market in the country, with monthly sales consistently topping $300 million. So far in 2026, April has been the strongest month for sales at $334.8 million, followed closely by May at nearly $333 million. February was the only month to fall below $320 million, with $302.5 million in sales.

For comparison, the $323.1 million sold in June was down slightly from May, but almost exactly in line with last year’s June total. The steady performance comes as California’s legal market continues to compete with unlicensed operators, high local tax burdens and price compression across several product categories.

California voters legalized marijuana for those 21 and older in 2016, with the state’s first licensed adult-use stores opening on January 1, 2018. Adults may possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and up to eight grams of cannabis concentrate, and they may grow up to six plants for personal use. California applies a 15% state cannabis excise tax, in addition to state and local sales taxes and any local cannabis business taxes.

California was also the first state in the nation to legalize medical marijuana, with voters approving the Compassionate Use Act in 1996.
