Massachusetts’ legal cannabis market generated $170 million in sales during June, establishing a new monthly record for the state’s legal market and bringing the total for 2026 to nearly $1 billion.
Licensed adult-use marijuana businesses reported approximately $156.4 million in sales during the month, while medical marijuana treatment centers recorded another $13 million, according to data from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission. Combined sales reached approximately $169.4 million.
The June total was roughly $13 million higher than May, when recreational and medical marijuana sales combined for approximately $156.1 million. June also surpassed the previous monthly record, with adult-use sales alone exceeding the roughly $148 million reported in August 2024.
From January through June, Massachusetts retailers sold approximately $907 million worth of marijuana. Sales during the first five days of July brought the 2026 total to roughly $934 million, including about $860 million in recreational marijuana sales and $74.4 million in medical sales.
Adult-use marijuana is subject to a 10.75% state excise tax and the state’s standard 6.25% sales tax, for a combined state rate of 17%. Based on that rate, June’s $156.4 million in recreational sales would generate an estimated $26.6 million in state tax revenue. That estimate does not include local marijuana taxes of up to 3%. Medical marijuana purchases are exempt from state and local marijuana taxes.
Massachusetts voters legalized recreational marijuana in November 2016, and the state’s first two adult-use stores opened on November 20, 2018. Adults 21 and older may possess and purchase up to two ounces of marijuana and keep up to 10 ounces at their primary residence. They may also grow six plants for personal use, with a maximum of 12 plants in a household with two or more adults.
