Legal marijuana sales continue to generate billions of dollars every month across the United States, but a relatively small number of states account for much of the country’s regulated market.
Nationwide legal marijuana sales reached approximately $2.56 billion in July, the most recent full month of nationwide data available. The total includes recreational marijuana markets as well as several of the country’s largest medical-only markets.
Using July sales figures compiled from state regulatory agencies and the cannabis research firm Headset, here are the 10 states currently selling the most legal marijuana in 2026.
1. California — $332.82 Million
California remains the largest legal marijuana market in the United States by a considerable margin.
Licensed retailers generated approximately $332.82 million in sales during July. For the first seven months of 2026, California marijuana sales reached roughly $2.28 billion, up about 6.3% compared with the same period in 2025.
California voters legalized recreational marijuana in 2016, with licensed adult-use sales beginning in January 2018. Despite increased competition from newer markets and years of declining marijuana prices, the state continues to lead the country in total sales.
2. Michigan — $260.6 Million
Michigan continues to hold a firm grip on the No. 2 spot, with approximately $260.6 million in legal marijuana sales during July.
The state generated nearly $1.49 billion during the first half of 2026 alone, including more than $1.48 billion in recreational marijuana purchases. Medical marijuana now represents only a small portion of Michigan’s overall market.
Michigan has also developed one of the country’s most competitive marijuana markets, with retail flower prices falling dramatically as production and the number of licensed businesses have increased.
3. Florida — $181 Million
Florida ranks third despite being one of only two states on this list without legal recreational marijuana sales.
The state’s medical marijuana market generated an estimated $181 million in July. Florida has more than 900,000 registered medical marijuana patients and hundreds of licensed dispensaries operating throughout the state.
The size of Florida’s market means it continues to compete with — and outperform — most states that have legalized recreational sales.
4. Massachusetts — $162.2 Million
Massachusetts retailers generated approximately $162.2 million in combined recreational and medical marijuana sales during July.
State data shows the market surpassed $1.1 billion in 2026 by August 9, including more than $1 billion in recreational marijuana purchases.
Massachusetts legalized recreational marijuana in 2016 and launched licensed sales in November 2018. It has since developed into one of the largest marijuana markets on the East Coast.
5. New York — $162 Million
New York is rapidly becoming one of the country’s largest marijuana markets, generating approximately $162 million in legal sales during July.
The state had already recorded approximately $895.4 million in combined recreational and medical marijuana sales through June.
Unlike several mature markets on this list, New York is still expanding rapidly as additional licensed dispensaries open. That gives the state substantial room for further growth and could eventually push it past several states currently ahead of it.
6. Illinois — $137.63 Million
Illinois recorded approximately $137.63 million in marijuana sales during July.
During the first six months of 2026, recreational marijuana sales alone reached $684.27 million, according to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
Illinois launched recreational marijuana sales in January 2020 and quickly became one of the largest legal markets in the Midwest. Sales include purchases made by both Illinois residents and visitors from other states.
7. Missouri — $136.6 Million
Missouri continues to stand out as one of the strongest newer recreational marijuana markets in the country.
Licensed stores generated approximately $136.6 million in July, putting the state only about $1 million behind Illinois despite Missouri having a significantly smaller population.
Missouri voters approved recreational marijuana legalization in November 2022, and licensed adult-use sales began in February 2023. Since then, the state’s market has consistently ranked among the country’s largest relative to population.
8. Pennsylvania — $116 Million
Pennsylvania ranks eighth with an estimated $116 million in medical marijuana sales during July.
Like Florida, Pennsylvania has not legalized recreational marijuana. All legal sales continue to take place through the state’s medical marijuana program.
Even with that limitation, Pennsylvania’s large patient population and extensive dispensary network have made it one of the biggest regulated marijuana markets in the country.
9. Ohio — $111.4 Million
Ohio generated approximately $111.4 million in combined recreational and medical marijuana sales during July.
The state is one of the newest recreational markets in the top 10. Ohio voters approved legalization in November 2023, with licensed adult-use sales launching in August 2024.
By early August 2026, Ohio’s combined medical and recreational marijuana market had surpassed $4 billion in all-time sales, including more than $1.67 billion in recreational purchases since adult-use sales began.
10. Maryland — $106.64 Million
Maryland rounds out the top 10 with approximately $106.64 million in marijuana sales during July.
The state legalized recreational marijuana through a voter-approved constitutional amendment in 2022, with licensed adult-use sales beginning July 1, 2023.
Maryland’s market has remained remarkably consistent, with monthly combined recreational and medical sales hovering around or above $100 million for much of 2026.
Several States Are Just Outside the Top 10
Arizona, Colorado and New Jersey are all within striking distance of the top 10.
Arizona generated approximately $103.29 million in July, Colorado recorded $101.48 million and New Jersey reached $101.22 million. Washington followed at $96.1 million.
That means relatively small month-to-month changes could shift several positions toward the bottom of the ranking.
California and Michigan, however, remain in a class of their own. Together, the two states generated nearly $600 million in legal marijuana sales during July, while fast-growing markets such as New York and Ohio continue to narrow the distance between newer and more established marijuana industries.
With nationwide legal marijuana sales reaching roughly $16.6 billion through July, the U.S. market remains on pace for another year of tens of billions of dollars in regulated purchases.
