The announcement arrives just weeks after Florida’s 2024 general election, where voters narrowly failed to meet the 60% approval threshold required to legalize recreational marijuana through a constitutional amendment.
The state now has over 700 medical marijuana dispensaries located throughout the state.
Florida legalized medical marijuana in 2016 through the passage of Amendment 2. Approved by 71% of voters, the measure expanded the state’s existing, more limited medical marijuana program, which had been enacted in 2014 to allow low-THC cannabis for specific conditions like epilepsy. The 2016 law allows patients with qualifying medical conditions, such as cancer, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, and chronic pain, to obtain marijuana through a licensed physician’s recommendation. The state’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) oversees the program, including the licensing of medical marijuana treatment centers and dispensaries.
