A Massachusetts attorney has been sentenced to three years of probation for her role in a plot to smuggle synthetic marijuana into the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls, Rhode Island.
According to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom, 51-year-old Theresa Marie DiJoseph pleaded guilty earlier this year to possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance analogue, conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, and providing a prohibited item to an inmate. Her sentence was handed down Thursday by U.S. District Court Judge Melissa DuBose.
Court documents show DiJoseph conspired in late 2023 to bring in 10 sheets of paper laced with K2, a synthetic form of marijuana, during visits with detainee Shawn D. Hart, 47, with whom she had a personal relationship. The visits took place in attorney-client rooms under the guise of conducting legal work.
On December 1, 2023, correctional officers seized the papers, which were noticeably thicker than normal and showed signs of being wet and dried. Lab testing later confirmed the presence of synthetic cannabinoids.
DiJoseph also admitted to lying to FBI agents during the investigation. As part of her sentence, she will serve the first six months of her probation under home confinement with GPS monitoring and must complete 100 hours of community service.
