Massachusetts’ marijuana market has sold over $800 million worth of legal product so far in 2026, generating $125 million in tax revenue, according to new data from the Cannabis Control Commission.
As of June 14, adult-use marijuana sales in Massachusetts totaled approximately $740 million for the year, while medical marijuana sales reached $64.7 million. Combined, the state’s legal marijuana market has generated more than $800 million in sales through the first five and a half months of the year.
Adult-use sales have remained strong throughout 2026, with May standing out as the highest month so far at $144.2 million. April followed at $137.9 million, with March at $136 million and January at $135.5 million. February brought in $124.4 million, while June sales had already reached $65 million by June 14, putting the month on pace to remain competitive with earlier totals.
Medical marijuana sales have also remained steady, though significantly lower than the adult-use market. Medical sales totaled around $12 million in January, $11.7 million in February, $12 million in March, $12 million in April and $11.9 million in May, with June at $5.6 million as of June 14.
The latest figures bring Massachusetts’ all-time marijuana sales total to $11.21 billion. Adult-use sales account for the vast majority of that amount, with the medical market contributing a smaller but consistent share.
The continued sales growth comes as prices remain at historic lows. The average cost of dried marijuana flower remains $3.89 per gram, matching the all-time low first set in April.
Massachusetts voters legalized adult-use marijuana in 2016, with the state’s first recreational marijuana stores opening in November 2018. Adults 21 and older may possess up to two ounces of marijuana in public and up to 10 ounces at home. Adult-use marijuana is taxed with a 6.25% state sales tax, a 10.75% excise tax and a local option tax of up to 3%, bringing the total tax rate to as much as 20%. Medical marijuana sales are not taxed.
So far in 2026, marijuana sales have resulted in roughly $125 million in tax revenue for Massachusetts. Since the launch of legal adult-use sales, the state has generated approximately $1.63 billion in marijuana tax revenue.
The totals underscore the continued strength of Massachusetts’ legal marijuana market, which remains one of the largest on the East Coast despite falling prices and a maturing retail landscape.
