7/10: What to Know About National Dab Day

National Dab Day

National Dab Day, celebrated each year on July 10, has become one of the cannabis community’s more recognizable unofficial holidays, especially among consumers who prefer concentrates over traditional marijuana flower.

Also known simply as 710, the day is centered around dabbing, a method of consuming marijuana concentrates such as wax, shatter, budder, rosin, live resin and hash oil. While April 20 remains the most widely known marijuana holiday, 7/10 has carved out its own place in cannabis culture as concentrates have become more common in legal markets.

The meaning behind 710 is simple: When the number is turned upside down, it resembles the word “OIL,” a long-standing reference to cannabis oil and other concentrated marijuana products. That connection helped turn July 10 into an informal day of recognition for dab consumers, extract artists, dispensaries and concentrate brands.

Dabbing typically involves placing a small amount of concentrate on a heated surface, often called a nail or banger, and inhaling the vapor through a dab rig. Other options, including electronic dab rigs, portable vaporizers and concentrate pens, have helped make the process more accessible to consumers who may not want to use a traditional torch-and-rig setup.

One reason concentrates have gained popularity is potency. While marijuana flower often contains THC levels in the teens or 20% range, concentrates can contain much higher THC levels, sometimes reaching 70%, 80% or more. For experienced consumers and some medical marijuana patients, that strength can be part of the appeal. For newer consumers, however, it also means dabbing can be overwhelming if they are not careful.

Because of that, National Dab Day is not just a celebration of concentrates, but also a reminder of the importance of responsible consumption. Those new to dabbing are generally encouraged to start with a very small amount, understand the potency of the product they are using, and consume in a safe setting. Concentrates can produce fast-acting and intense effects, making them very different from smoking a standard joint or using a low-dose edible.

The day has grown alongside the legal marijuana industry. Dispensaries in legal markets often mark July 10 with discounts on concentrates, vape products and dab accessories, while consumers use the day to highlight their favorite extracts, rigs and dabbing techniques online. In some areas, cannabis events and gatherings are also held around the date.

The exact origin of 7/10 as National Dab Day is not clearly documented, but the phrase began gaining wider recognition in the early 2010s, around the same time that concentrates were becoming more prominent in dispensaries and cannabis media. Since then, it has steadily become a fixture in marijuana culture.

For many consumers, 7/10 is a celebration of one of the fastest-growing segments of the cannabis market. For others, it is simply another reminder of how far marijuana culture has evolved, from flower and homemade edibles to a wide range of refined products now found in licensed stores across much of the country.
