Here Are the States With the Cheapest Legal Marijuana Prices

Recreational marijuana is legal in 24 states, which could jump to 27 after the November 5 election. In these states, average marijuana prices vary greatly.

Due to a variety of reasons —state and local regulations and tax rates, for example— prices vary substantially among the legal marijuana states. With that in mind, in this article we breakdown the states with the cheapest average marijuana prices, using data supplied by state regulatory agencies.

Below are are the legal marijuana states with the cheapest average price per gram of dried flower:

Oregon

$3.60 per gram

In October, the average price per gram of marijuana dropped to the all-time low of $3.60 in Oregon. This is a 65% decrease from the $10.50 average when legal marijuana sales first began in 2016.

Oregon legalized marijuana in 2014, making them the third state to do so behind Washington and Colorado.

Michigan

$4.50 per gram

The average price of cannabis in Michigan has seen a steady decline in recent months. As of the end of September, the average price per ounce according to the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency is just $78, coming out to around $2.80 per gram. However, when purchasing by the gram, the average price is around $4.50.

Michigan voters legalized marijuana in November 2018, with the first licensed retail outlet opening in 2019.

Massachusetts

$4.85 per gram

As of October 13, in Massachusetts the average price of a gram of marijuana is $4.85, the lowest it’s ever been in the state.

Massachusetts legalized marijuana in 2016, with the first licensed marijuana retail outlet opening its doors in 2018.

Colorado

$5 per gram

In Colorado, the average price per gram of dried marijuana flower is around $5 per gram. Colorado tied Washington as the first state to legalize marijuana in 2012, with sales beginning in 2014.

Washington

$6.96 per gram

The average price per gram in Washington has remained steady for quite some time, with the current average at $6.96 according to the research firm Headset (which we used when state marijuana commissions failed to supply the data).

The state legalized marijuana during the November 2012 election, tying Colorado as the first state to do so, with marijuana stores opening in 2014.

Maine

$7.26 per gram

Marijuana prices in Maine have remained consistent for months. As of September 2024, the average price per gram is $7.26.

Marijuana was legalized in Maine via the initiative process in 2016, with the first licensed marijuana store opening in October 2020.

Ohio

$7.67 per gram

When Ohio launched their recreational marijuana market on August 7, the average price per gram was nearly $10. As of the end of October, the price has dropped to $7.67 per gram. This puts it far higher than states like Oregon and Michigan, but considerably lower than the more expensive legal marijuana states like Illinois.
