The Warren (MI) City Council has approved an ordinance that allows for an unlimited number of licensed marijuana stores in the city.
The council voted 5 to 2 yesterday to approve the bill. City Attorney Jeffrey Schroder requested the proposal, saying it would end several years-long lawsuits involving cannabis applicants.
Warren is Michigan’s third most populated city, with a population of around 132k.
Michigan voters approved marijuana legalization in 2018, with the first licensed retail outlets opening the following year. Under the law, those 21 and older can legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and 15 grams of marijuana concentrate, which they can purchase at a licensed marijuana store or dispensary.
According to the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), there is 858 licensed marijuana stores in the state. In February, these stores generated $241,926,632 in total sales.
