Marijuana prices vary dramatically across the country, but some states consistently offer better deals than others. With fresh data for May, here’s a look at the 10 states where legal cannabis is cheapest right now.
Whether it’s due to lower taxes, a competitive market, or looser regulations, these states are leading the way when it comes to affordable marijuana. This list is based on state regulatory data and Headset figures where state numbers aren’t available.
Oregon – $3.33 per gram of dried flower
The average price in Oregon dropped from $3.47 at the end of March, to $3.33 to end April, marking a new all-time low. This is according to data released by the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission. The cost per gram of cannabis concentrates also reached a new low of $15 per gram.
Michigan – $3.75 per gram
Michigan’s cannabis prices have been on a steady decline, and currently average just $65 per ounce, or when purchased by the gram around $3.75, notably cheaper than any state other than Oregon.
Massachusetts – $4.42 per gram
The average cost per gram in Massachusetts to end April was $0.01 less than the month prior, indicating price stabilization. This puts Massachusetts comfortably in third on this list, with prices around 15% higher than Michigan and Oregon, but around 10% lower than the next state on this list.
Colorado – $6 per gram
According to the research firm Headset, the average cost per gram in Colorado saw an significant uptick in the past month, from nearly $5 per gram to around $6 per gram. Still, the change keeps Colorado fourth on our monthly breakdown of the cheapest legal cannabis states.
Ohio – $6.25 per gram
In Ohio, prices have seen a steady decline since the August launch of the adult-use cannabis market. Prices then were $9.40 per gram, and now have dropped to a new low of $6.25 per gram.
Maine – $6.84 per gram
Maine’s legal cannabis prices remained steady again to end April, averaging slightly less than $7 per gram.
Washington – $6.94 per gram
Washington’s average prices dropped from $7.18 per gram to end March, to $6.94 per gram now. Still, with an average cost $0.10 higher than Maine, Washington retains its 7th spot on this list.
Montana – $7.50 per gram
Montana’s cannabis prices have remained steady for quite some time now, currently averaging $7.50 per gram.
Arizona – $8 per gram
Arizona’s average cost per gram of dried flower is around $8, considerably higher than the states that came before it on this list, but also considerably lower than some of the more expensive states.
Illinois – $8.32 per gram
According to the Illinois Cannabis Regulation Oversight Officer, the average price for a gram of cannabis in the state is $8.32. Although this isn’t particularly low, it’s drastically cheaper than the $17 average in 2020.
