Jessica García has been confirmed by the New York State Senate to serve as Chair of the Cannabis Control Board.
García has served as a board member on the Cannabis Control Board since 2021. Her confirmation as chair marks a new leadership chapter for the board, which oversees the implementation and regulation of New York’s marijuana laws.
García is Assistant to the President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), where she represents workers across the food supply chain and in retail and healthcare. She previously served as Deputy Political Director for the RWDSU and has a long history of legislative and political organizing.
In addition to her work with the union, García serves on the Board of Directors of the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health and was appointed in 2021 by the U.S. Secretary of Labor to the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH).
Governor Kathy Hochul praised the confirmation, stating, “New Yorkers deserve the best and the brightest individuals serving them, working to make New York safer, more affordable and more liveable.”
García earned her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Harvard University and her Master of Social Work from the Hunter College School of Social Work.
