The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), the nation’s oldest cannabis policy group, has issued a call to action to encourage Congress to oppose any removal of federal provisions protecting state medical cannabis laws.
“The White House’s 2026 fiscal year budget request calls for the repeal of a long-standing federal budget rider that prohibits the Justice Department from using taxpayer dollars to prosecute patients and others involved in state-legal medical marijuana programs”, says NORML. “The provision, which has been in place since 2014, protects patients, caregivers, and medical cannabis providers in the 39 states that have legalized medical access from federal interference or criminal prosecution.”
NORML notes that “Prior to the passage of this protection, federal prosecutors routinely took actions against patients and dispensaries in legal states.”
Despite the Administration’s demand, the decision to either include or repeal this language rests solely with Congress. NORML encourages people to “Please send this pre-written letter telling your lawmakers to maintain these important federal protections for patients.”
