California Cannabis Market Hits $1.835 Billion in Mid-Year Sales, Over $275 Million in Taxes Garnered

California sold more than $300 million worth of marijuana in June, pushing the state’s year-to-date total to over $1.83 billion.

According to retail data from the Seattle-based research firm Headset, licensed marijuana stores sold $300,667,251 in June. That follows $307,589,957 in May, $310,010,076 in April, $315,354,198 in March, $288,542,974 in February, and $313,023,076 in January. In total, consumers spent $1,835,187,532 on marijuana and marijuana products during the first six months of the year, resulting in approximately $275 million in tax revenue.

Dried cannabis flower made up the largest share of sales during this period, accounting for roughly 45% of all purchases. Vape pens and cartridges followed at 21%, while edibles brought in 12.5%, and concentrates came in just behind at 12%. The remaining sales—about 9.5%—included items like capsules, tinctures, beverages, and topicals. As has been the case for months, Blue Dream remained California’s top-selling strain. Prices

California became the first state in the U.S. to legalize medical marijuana with Proposition 215 in 1996. In 2016, voters approved Proposition 64 to legalize marijuana for adult use. Retail sales began on January 1, 2018. Recreational sales are taxed at 15% through a state excise tax, with an additional state sales tax of 7.25% and optional local taxes that can bring the total tax burden to 30% or more. Tax revenue is split between youth substance use programs, environmental cleanup, and public safety grants for cities and counties.

Although sales have slightly declined from their 2021 peak, California remains the largest legal marijuana market in the world. Despite ongoing challenges from high taxes, limited retail access in some regions, and competition from the unlicensed market, consumer demand has remained steady heading into the second half of 2025.
