Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says the psychedelic compound ibogaine could help save millions of lives, especially for those suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), addiction and other serious mental health conditions.

In an interview published this week with W. Brian Hubbard, executive director of Americans for Ibogaine, Gingrich described the treatment as an “astonishing breakthrough” and pledged to help raise awareness and support for it. He said ibogaine may offer new hope for people failed by the country’s current “sick care system.”
“We currently have a sick care system when we need a healthcare system,” said Gingrich. “This is very, very exciting to me.”
While acknowledging the need for FDA oversight and additional clinical trials, the longtime Republican leader said he was “so inspired” by the conversation that he now plans to “strongly engage” in promoting the treatment nationwide.
“This could be an astonishing breakthrough in what has been a long losing struggle with addiction across this country,” he said. “I can’t imagine a more timely conversation.”
Support for psychedelics like ibogaine has increasingly gained traction among conservatives, with some inside former President Trump’s orbit also showing interest in their potential role in mental health and addiction recovery—especially for military veterans. Former Texa s Governor Rick Perry recently announced in an op-ed that he would be dedicated the remainder of his life to promoting ibogaine.
