Georgia authorities arrested rapper GloRilla on felony drug charges after she reported a home invasion—an outcome now drawing sharp criticism from a state lawmaker who says the case never should have happened.
Representative Eric Bell (D) is calling on prosecutors to drop the charges and is using the incident to push legislation that would prevent similar situations. “She deserves support, not punishment for trying to protect herself and her home,” said Bell in a statement to Fox5 Atlanta. “We cannot send the message that doing the right thing puts you at greater risk.”
Deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported break-in at GloRilla’s home around 1:30 a.m. on July 20. Investigators say someone inside the residence fired a gun at three intruders, who fled the scene. No suspects have been identified and no injuries were reported.
While investigating, deputies claimed to smell marijuana and obtained a search warrant. They say they later found cannabis in plain view inside the home’s master bedroom closet. Two days later, GloRilla turned herself in on felony charges of marijuana possession and possession of a controlled substance. She was released the same day on a $22,260 bond.
Representative Bell is highlighting the case as part of the push for House Bill 464, legislation he introduced that would grant limited legal immunity to people who report a crime but are later found with minor infractions. “HB 464 is not about going easy on crime. It is about being smart about justice,” he said.
GloRilla has criticized law enforcement for focusing on her instead of the people who broke into her home, writing on July 24 that “police cared more about weed than catching the intruders.”
Bell argues the rapper’s experience reflects a broader pattern of Black victims facing criminalization when seeking help. “Unfortunately stories like hers are not rare,” he said.
