A new study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology reports that THC and CBD produce markedly different effects on brain function, with THC increasing connectivity and blood flow while CBD decreases certain measures of connectivity without altering blood flow.
Researchers from the University of Reading, Heinrich-Heine University, and King’s College London administered THC, CBD, and a THC:CBD combination to rats before measuring brain activity using advanced neuroimaging techniques. THC was found to increase whole-brain functional connectivity and elevate blood flow across cortical and subcortical regions.
CBD, in contrast, reduced connectivity measures but did not affect blood flow. When administered together, THC and CBD produced more moderate increases in both connectivity and perfusion, suggesting that CBD tempered some of THC’s effects.
The study also found that THC specifically heightened connectivity between cortical, hippocampal, and striatal regions—changes that were less pronounced when CBD was included. Overall, the findings highlight how these cannabinoids drive distinct neurophysiological responses and suggest that CBD may moderate the intensity of THC’s impact on brain networks.
According to the authors, these results support the value of preclinical neuroimaging in identifying cannabinoid-induced brain changes that could inform future therapeutic applications. They conclude that THC’s stimulatory effects on connectivity and blood flow, and CBD’s contrasting role, could help guide the development of targeted cannabinoid-based treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
