New Mexico Marijuana Sales Reach $48.6 Million in August, Pushing Year-to-Date Total to Nearly $400 Million

New Mexico’s marijuana industry generated $48.6 million in sales during August, adding to what has already been a strong year for the market.

With this latest figure, sales for 2025 have climbed to $383.7 million, according to the state’s Regulation and Licensing Department.

Recreational purchases once again made up the bulk of revenue, totaling $37.4 million. Medical marijuana sales contributed $11.2 million, showing the program remains a steady part of the market despite the continued dominance of adult-use.

Consumers completed 855,416 transactions across the state in August, split between 712,789 recreational purchases and 230,051 medical ones. The average spend per visit came out to $52.47 for adult-use customers and $48.68 for medical patients.

The new totals reflect more than $1.88 billion in overall marijuana sales since legalization, including $1.35 billion in recreational sales and $542 million in medical purchases. Altogether, consumers have completed nearly 42 million transactions since the market opened.

Albuquerque remains the state’s top marijuana market, generating well over half a billion dollars in revenue, with Sunland Park, Las Cruces, and Santa Fe trailing behind as other major hubs for sales.

Adult-use marijuana became legal through the Cannabis Regulation Act of 2021, which allows adults 21 and older to purchase marijuana products and cultivate up to six mature plants individually or 12 per household. Recreational purchases carry a 12% excise tax that increases annually until it reaches 18% in 2030, while medical marijuana continues to be sold tax-free.

New Mexico currently has 1,006 licensed cannabis stores, and 3,071 licensed cannabis businesses.
