Michigan has over 850 licensed retail outlets now operating across the state, according to a new report released today by the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency.
According to the Cannabis Regulatory Agency’s September 2025 report, there are currently 851 licensed adult-use retailers, the most ever in the state, in addition to 107 licensed medical provisioning centers.
Michigan’s cannabis workforce has also expanded alongside retail growth. The report shows 40,446 employees now working under the state’s combined medical and adult-use systems, a number that continues to rise as new businesses open.
Michigan voters approved recreational marijuana in 2018, with the first adult-use sales beginning in December 2019. Since then, Michigan has grown into one of the nation’s largest marijuana markets, surpassing $12.5 billion in adult-use sales as of the end of September.
The 851 licensed retailers are spread across the state, from Detroit and Grand Rapids to smaller communities in northern and rural Michigan. With such widespread access, Michigan’s marijuana industry is now both one of the most robust and geographically diverse in the country. Michigan is topped only by California in total sales, but leads the nation in per capita sales.
This retail growth comes even as prices continue to drop. The average ounce of adult-use flower in September sold for just over $63, underscoring Michigan’s reputation for having some of the most affordable marijuana in the U.S. (only Oregon has cheaper prices on average). This is down nearly 20% from the $78 per ounce average in September 2024. Despite prices down 20% from the previous September, overall sales are down just 5%.
