President Trump has chosen Mark Savaya, who owns a chain of marijuana dispensaries in the Detroit-area, to serve as the administration’s new special envoy to Iraq.
The announcement was made Sunday on Trump’s Truth Social page.
“Mark’s deep understanding of the Iraq-U.S. relationship, and his connections in the region, will help advance the interests of the American people,” Trump wrote, while also crediting Savaya for helping him secure “a record vote with Muslim Americans” in Michigan.
Savaya, who has no prior government experience, is best known locally as the founder of Leaf and Bud, a chain of dispensaries recognized for its billboard campaign along Detroit’s 8 Mile Road. The campaign drew so much attention that city leaders enacted restrictions on marijuana-related advertising.
Savaya celebrated the appointment on Instagram, writing that he was “deeply humbled, honored and grateful to President Donald J. Trump” for the position. He added that he is committed to “strengthening the U.S.–Iraq partnership under President Trump’s leadership and guidance.”
Although Savaya’s role will have no impact on cannabis policies, the move is yet another indication that Trump has no issue providing roles for those involved in the cannabis industry or those supportive of cannabis reform.
