According to new data published by the Illinois Cannabis Regulation Oversight Officer, adult-use retailers brought in $113.1 million for the month, while medical dispensaries reported $14.2 million. Combined, that’s $127.3 million in total marijuana sales for October. This is an uptick from the $118 million sold in September, but slightly below the $129 million sold in August.

With two months remaining in the year, Illinois has now generated $1.279 billion in adult-use sales and $179.3 million in medical purchases. Together, the state is approaching $1.5 billion in marijuana revenue so far in 2025, keeping it on pace to finish the year roughly in line with 2024’s totals.

Illinois’ legal marijuana system has grown steadily since lawmakers approved the state’s adult-use law in 2019. Sales officially began on January 1, 2020, making Illinois the first state to launch a commercial market through the Legislature rather than by voter initiative. Adults 21 and older are allowed to possess up to 30 grams of marijuana flower, 500 milligrams of THC in infused products, and five grams of concentrates. Nonresidents face lower limits.

Medical marijuana has remained a stable but smaller portion of statewide revenue, and October’s $14.2 million is consistent with recent monthly trends. Still, the bulk of Illinois’ revenue continues to come from the adult-use market, which has seen sustained demand from both in-state residents and visitors.

Although this is the first update since the spring, the new data shows that Illinois’ marijuana market remains one of the largest in the country.
