Medicare officials are preparing to launch a pilot program that would make certain CBD-based treatments available to seniors, according to new reporting from Bloomberg.
The move, which comes just weeks after President Trump posted a video on social media calling CBD a “game changer” for seniors, marks one of the federal government’s most direct steps toward evaluating how cannabinoid therapies could fit into traditional elder care, particularly for conditions where existing medications come with significant side effects.
Under the plan, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services would test whether specific CBD formulations can be provided through Medicare Advantage plans or other approved pathways. Bloomberg reports that the effort is aimed at understanding how non-intoxicating cannabinoids might reduce pain, improve sleep, or help older adults manage chronic conditions without relying as heavily on opioids or other high-risk medications.
Supporters say the pilot could provide much-needed clarity for millions of seniors who already use over-the-counter CBD without guidance from their physicians.
If the test program shows strong results, it could open the door for broader coverage in the future, expanding treatment options while reducing reliance on medications that carry a higher risk profile for older adults.
