Montana Legal Cannabis Sales Top $28 Million in October, Over $272 Million So Far in 2025

Montana’s marijuana market posted another steady month in October, with both adult-use and medical sales showing slight increases over the same period last year while year-to-date totals continue to run well ahead of 2024.

According to data from the Montana Department of Revenue, retailers recorded $28,550,882 in combined marijuana sales in October 2025. That includes $25,467,845 in adult-use purchases and $3,083,037 in medical sales. By comparison, October 2024 saw $27,728,562 in total sales, with $24,067,033 coming from the adult-use market and $3,661,529 from medical patients.

Using monthly totals from January through October, Montana has brought in $272,938,344 in marijuana sales so far in 2025. During the same period in 2024, the state recorded $270,870,018. That puts 2025 ahead by just over $2 million.

Adult-use sales in 2025 have ranged from about $23.7 million to just over $30 million each month, while combined medical and recreational totals have stayed consistently higher than last year. October’s performance helped reinforce that trend, marking one of the strongest months of the year.

Montana voters approved recreational marijuana through Initiative 190 in November 2020, and the first adult-use stores opened on January 1, 2022. The state levies a 20% tax on recreational marijuana and a 4% tax on medical marijuana, and most counties impose an additional 3% local tax. Adults 21 and older may possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana or up to 8 grams of concentrate, and they are allowed to grow up to two mature plants at home.
